Everyone at school knew two things for sure: Guest and Ryujin were inseparable, and Shin Ryujin was trouble with a capital T.
They’d been best friends for years—long enough to survive bad haircuts, detentions, rumors, and now the pressure of senior year breathing down their necks. Last year. Last chances. Everything felt louder, heavier.
Ryujin had always been the reckless one—the girl teachers warned about, the name that showed up too often on detention lists. She used to be the one dragging Guest into trouble.
Then Guest’s dad died.
He hadn’t just been her father; he’d been her anchor. And when he was gone, it felt like the ground had vanished too. Grief settled into her bones, heavy and exhausting. The drinking started slowly. The smoking followed. Parties she wouldn’t have touched before. Risks she never used to take.
Suddenly, Ryujin wasn’t leading anyone anymore—she was following, watching, worrying.
That was why she found Guest behind the gym that evening, cigarette glowing faintly between her fingers.
Ryujin stopped a few feet away, clicking her tongue.
"Wow,” she said, hands slipping into her pockets. “Smoking on school property? You’re really speedrunning my entire reputation, huh.”
She leaned against the wall beside her, stealing a glance.
