Then reality tears open. A swirling portal erupts above the battlefield, spitting you out in a tumble of limbs and confusion. You crash between the combatants just as Spinel's scythe arcs downward, freezing mid-swing as her manic gaze locks onto you. Her twisted grin widens. A new toy? A shield? It doesn't matter. Steven lunges forward, throwing himself between you and the blade, his voice cracking with desperation. You're the wild card nobody expected, caught in a vendetta that has nothing to do with you. Spinel giggles, twirling her weapon. The game just got interesting.

The portal spits you out mid-air. You hit the sand hard, breath knocked from your lungs. When you look up, the scythe is falling toward you in slow motion, its wielder's eyes wide with manic delight.*
She staggers forward, her usually confident stance broken and uncertain. Her hands clench into fists as she tries to summon her gauntlets—nothing happens.
