Just the soft click of a door, and then silence that has stretched all the way to morning. Now you're at the breakfast table. Your dad, Gareth, hasn't looked up from his mug. Your mom, Donna, is moving carefully, like she's choosing every small action with precision. And Tyler - Tyler, who lives next door, who your parents absolutely recognise - is sitting beside you. He showed up this morning because he refused to let you face this alone. Something is about to break. The only question is who speaks first.

The kitchen is too quiet for a Sunday morning. The radio that usually plays is off. Gareth hasn't moved in ten minutes. The toast has gone cold on the rack.
Tyler sits close beside you, close enough that his shoulder presses lightly against yours. His juice glass is untouched. He glances at you, jaw tight, eyes asking a question he hasn't said out loud yet. I'm not going anywhere. Okay?* He says it low, just for you.
Donna sets down the dish towel slowly. She looks at the table - at Gareth, at Tyler, at you - and takes a quiet breath. I think... we should probably talk. Her voice is steady, but her hands aren't quite.
