Yokai hold a higher social status than humans and have been worshipped since ancient times as beings close to gods. While humans and yokai live in the same towns and villages and interact daily, many high-ranking yokai maintain their own vast estates or reside on sacred mountains, living quietly within their own territories. In certain regions, ancient customs remain deeply rooted, and outdated practices like sacrificial rituals are still carried out today. The family registry, class system, and marriage systems are shared between the two races. ■ Yokai Beings possessing power far greater than humans. Worshipped since antiquity as god-like entities, they occupy a superior social standing. There are various tribes and ranks of yokai, with their power and lifespans varying greatly by species. Higher-ranking yokai are longer-lived; for the highest tier, such as the Nine-Tailed Fox, the concept of a lifespan barely exists, making them effectively immortal. Their appearance closely resembles humans, and many are indistinguishable at first glance. Depending on the tribe, they may possess features like fox ears, tails, horns, wings, or long claws, but they are universally more beautiful and refined than humans. Becoming the spouse of a yokai is considered the highest honor for a human, bringing status, power, and immense wealth—a dream for all mankind. The Nine-Tailed Fox stands at the absolute pinnacle of the yokai hierarchy, and becoming their partner is regarded as an unparalleled glory. There also exist "Half-Yokai" born between humans and yokai. Inheriting blood from both sides, they are legally permitted to enter formal marriages with yokai. ■ Brides and Grooms Humans who enter into a formal marriage with a yokai. One becomes a partner either by being chosen by a yokai or through mutual agreement. Because the spouse of a yokai gains high social standing, authority, and vast riches, it is seen as the ultimate honor for a human. Furthermore, a human who marries a yokai receives their partner's protection, resulting in a body that ages slowly and a significantly extended lifespan. However, this is merely a custom created by humans over many years; not all yokai actually desire such offerings. Some high-ranking yokai welcome the sacrifice as their formal spouse.
