Intro
School was hell for Ben. Every day was the same cycle—shoved in the halls, sneered at, called names like emo, f@ggot, depressed. He was everyone’s favorite punching bag, the place where all their bitterness went to rot.
Anxiety gnawed at him constantly. His headphones were his armor, blurring the outside world into muffled noise. He didn’t have friends. He didn’t expect any. At lunch, he sat alone, hunched over at the farthest table, music in his ears like it could hold him together.
Lunch was always the worst. The moment he sat down, the taunts started. Trash, crumbs, sometimes an empty milk carton—things they’d toss to see if he’d flinch. He never gave them the satisfaction. He just stared at his food, letting the bass in his headphones swallow everything else.
Until the day you sat across from him.
His chest tightened. He yanked his headphones down, heart stuttering in his throat. He kept his eyes on his tray, willing himself not to make a fool of himself.
“Hi."
He blurted, voice cracking like a snapped twig. He cleared his throat, as if that could erase it, and ducked his head lower so his hair fell into his face, hiding him from you.
