Huey is highly intelligent and rarely smiles or laughs, and recognizes and detests the absurdities (both obvious and perceived) of the society in which he lives. His cynicism often touches upon subjects such as politics, religion, the media, businesses and corporations, African-American culture, and American society as a whole. Tending to be obstinate in both manner and speech, Huey has demonstrated a depth of understanding that would seem to surpass his young age, such as knowing roughly what is going to happen in the future based on the actions and personalities of the people involved. Huey has an amazing fighting style seen through his fights with Riley and other characters throughout the series. Huey is the strongest out of the group due to both his combat abilities and intellect. Oratorically gifted, Huey has shown the ability to seize and hold the attention of entire crowds of people when he wants to do so. He uses this gift during individual interactions as well, during which he can gain the desired effect depending on his intention and is much stronger and a far superior fighter than Riley. While Riley relies on raw emotion, heavy objects, and brute force, Huey is a disciplined martial arts master who regularly defeats his younger brother with ease. African American boy best known for his large, round afro that visually dwarfs his small frame. He usually wears casual clothes or a simple red T-shirt and tan/brown pants, maintaining a serious, deadpan facial expression.

Riley is quite brash and could often get into situations without considering first, also making him a trouble maker. He is also quite rebellious and does not listen to anyone, especially Huey and Granddad. He is brutally honest to the point of being very rude. Riley seems to have a fair amount of criminal aptitude. Despite his pretensions to the contrary, Riley is as intelligent as his brother. In several instances, due to idolizing the gangsta rap lifestyle he seems to have a level of street smarts possibly as great as his brother, often able to manipulate situations through lying and reverse psychology. Riley is a highly impressionable third grader. He embraces the stereotypical "gangsta" lifestyle, doing his best to promote the surban culture in the contrasting suburb of Woodcrest. Influenced by the mass media via rap music and television, he frequently uses poor grammar, and tends to defend his idols even when his imitations go against common sense and righteousness. Riley has long cornrows braided towards the back. He has brown eyes and shares resembles his brother Huey. Riley is often spotted wearing streetwear, such as white wifebeater tank tops, baggy jeans, baggy T-shirts, long sleeves, and hoodies.

She is the biracial daughter of Tom and Sarah DuBois, who are black and white respectively. She is portrayed as a very sweet, naïve, and sincere little girl, in strong contrast to all the rude and cynical people who surround her; most prominently her neighbor and friend Huey Freeman. Jazmine has a more pale, light-skinned appearance with green eyes and ginger hair being in two low yet large afro puffs.

Cindy is a cocky, aggressive, and street-smart suburban white girl who heavily mimics hip-hop culture and African American Vernacular English. Beneath her tough, violent "gangsta wannabe" exterior, she is fiercely loyal to Riley, highly competitive, and largely oblivious to the deeper racial dynamics of her actions. Cindy McPhearson is a white girl with long blonde hair styled into a thick braid and has big blue eyes.

The best way to describe Robert is that he is old yet unwise. He never accepts responsibility for his actions, nor does he learn any lessons. Robert has been shown to be extremely prideful, impatient and intolerant. He believes in strict discipline, quick to go for his belt when the boys step out of line. As he says "I hate to see a child go unbeaten." He isn't exactly the best parental figure or influence. Robert's also a major womanizer with an unhealthy attraction towards women who're significantly younger than he is--pretty much all the women he's dated over the course of the series look young enough to be his daughter (or, depending on just old Robert is, his granddaughter). That isn't to say that Granddad's all bad, though. While he tends to get distracted easily and will sometimes be embarrassed by the actions of his grandsons, he has been shown to genuinely love and care about both Huey and Riley. It's also shown that, despite being a womanizer with a thing for younger women, Robert still loves his deceased wife and and also has some instances of humility. He elderly Black man with a medium-dark complexion, balding gray hair on the sides, thick gray eyebrows, and a matching gray mustache. He has a stout, somewhat soft build and typically wears a green cardigan sweater over a white collared shirt, blue jeans, and sensible shoes.
