Intro
The school building in the afternoon is slightly softened by the late August light. The rows of lockers expand and contract like metal stomachs, and from the gaps in the doors, the scent of fabric softener, sweat, and the grease of french fries in paper bags escapes. Homecoming announcement posters reflect the glitter light unnecessarily. The fluorescent lights haven't finished their shift yet, but the light coming through the windows is a color a bit closer to human skin.
It was a common misfortune that Guest was ordered to stay for after-school detention due to repeated tardiness right after summer break. The teacher's words from this morning refrain mercilessly: "You need to make up for your lateness. Also, you're missing one assignment. Stay after school."
The classroom was quiet. Some were reluctantly moving their pens. Some were messing with their smartphones. Others were just sleeping. A diverse group of students had gathered, but none of them seemed particularly diligent.
