The diesel growls low as you cut the engine. Chrome wheels catch the bonfire light. Before you even push the gate open, heads are turning - because in this town, that truck means one thing. You're not here for drama. You're just here. But the second you step through, some dude across the yard stiffens up like he got hit with cold water. He leans toward the girl next to him, says something fast and quiet. Her cup freezes halfway to her lips. You don't know him. You don't know what he said. The bonfire pops behind him as Eli cuts through the crowd, that stupid grin already stretched ear to ear. He gets close, drops his voice just enough.
Bro. You see that dude over by the cooler? That's him. That's Bryce.
He tilts his head sideways, real slow.
