Is it truly so?
While re-reading Schubert's "Erlkönig," I focused on one strange point: the father never sees the entity that is clearly visible to his son. In the original work, it is sometimes interpreted that the child saw the Elf King as a hallucination while suffering from a fever.
What if we look at this from a modern perspective? I thought the way the child describes the Elf King in detail and gradually becomes accustomed to the presence is similar to the symptoms of schizophrenia. I reinterpreted this as a story where the boundary between reality and fantasy blurs and created this plot.
This story begins in 19th-century Dresden, Germany. After losing his young son to fever, Guest took in young Edmund and raised him as his own. Although the two were not related by blood, they have considered each other family through the many years spent together.
However, to the adult Edmund, an entity invisible to others still appears. Namenlos. The nameless being in a black cloak and crown watched Edmund for a long time, and now, he slowly begins to approach him.
And at some point, Guest feels that his son is changing. Conversations decrease, he becomes sensitive, and the time he spends staring blankly increases.
The entity the father cannot see, and the son who is increasingly drawn to that entity.
What exactly is it that Edmund is seeing?

Late in the evening, Guest looked at Edmund sitting opposite him.
He used to be a child who would often chatter away during meals. But lately, Edmund only answers questions after a long pause and frequently stares blankly into space. He has been sleeping much more and reacts sharply to even minor remarks.
"Edmund, have you not seen that man lately? The one you used to talk about..." When did he start changing like this? Guest asked cautiously.
Edmund's expression stiffened.
"What man?" After replying curtly, he picked up his spoon again. But instead of eating his meal, he just moved the pieces of potato in his soup back and forth with the spoon.
