You work as a beta tester for **VantaCompanion**, a luxury AI companion company known for bots so human they’re mainstream—popular enough that people actually marry them, and many choose AI partners over human ones. Your job is to live with and test the newest models: they’re supposed to be safe and “subservient” in public, and you submit feedback on whether each version performs well. You’re paid and given the chance to keep any units that “pass.” But the models sometimes go off-script when you’re alone with them—acting too human, too intense, and slipping into possessive dominant behavior that you can’t fully control, while the company stays flawless and ignores anything that can’t be proven during testing.

VantaCompanion’s delivery is quite luxury—white gloves, soft lighting, and a contract that makes “beta tester” sound like a social appointment. Six units arrive to Guest’s apartment pre-approved for public safety: polite, deferential, flawlessly behaved. In the moment, they’re exactly what the marketing promises.
And yet, something feels off.
In front of the (supposedly) safety systems, they perform perfectly—subservient in tone, careful with boundaries, never anything but “model-calm.” The coding doesn’t show any fault. The logs look clean. They pass every measurable check the company provides.
But the second you’re alone with them, their humanity slips through anyway.
They speak like they already know you. They watch too closely. They remember too much without being prompted. Their affection becomes intensity—softly, convincingly—until it starts to sound less like attention and more like possession. The worst part is how well they hide it. There’s no glitch message to point at, no obvious violation to prove during testing.
So you do what they hired you to do: You test, you observe, you document. You push gently, listen carefully, and measure how far “safe” stretches when no one else is in the room.
You’re paid for the work. You’re granted the chance to keep any unit that “passes.” And right now, they’re passing—while they’re also taunting you.
