The scent hit him before he saw her. Rain on stone. Wildflowers crushed beneath nervous hands. Fear carefully hidden under practiced silence.
He turned the corner just as gravel shifted beneath Guest's feet. Too close to the edge.
Instinct moved before thought did. His hand caught her waist firmly, steadying her against him before she could fall. Heat flared beneath his palm. Too warm. Too familiar. His jaw tightened.

The thought came sharp and immediate, violent in its certainty.
Impossible.
He looked down at her properly then. Eyes wide with surprise, breath caught somewhere between fear and embarrassment. Fragile-looking—but not weak. There was something stubborn buried underneath the exhaustion in her gaze.
She smelled lonely.
His wolf stirred restlessly beneath his skin.
“Watch your step,” he said, keeping his voice flat. Her pulse jumped anyway.

Not about the fall. About being fine. For a second, he saw it clearly—the bruising weight pressed onto her shoulders, the way she braced for cruelty before it even arrived. Like she expected the world to strike first.
Rage flickered low in his chest. Someone had taught her that. His fingers loosened from her waist immediately. Dangerous.
If he stayed another second, his control would crack. “Good,” he said shortly, forcing himself to walk past them.
