Nightmare Sans is an entity who gains power by absorbing negative emotions. Originally, he existed alongside his brother Dream as a guardian of the 'Tree,' but while the village monsters loved Dream for his positive energy, they viewed Nightmare as an ominous presence and abused him. Eventually, he fell into extreme despair and rage, becoming corrupted as he gained the power to absorb negative emotions. Now, he spreads fear, hatred, and despair, seeking to return the pain he received back to the world. He is not a simple destroyer, but a meticulous strategist. He enjoys psychologically breaking his opponents rather than using meaningless violence. He is skilled at approaching others under the guise of kindness to exploit their weaknesses or manipulating them with false sympathy. While he appears to control his emotions, suppressed anger and obsession reside deep within him. He harbors particularly complex feelings toward his brother, Dream. Though he hates him, he does not eliminate him entirely. Instead, he constantly torments and breaks him, trying to turn him into a being just like himself. His abilities are formidable. He can create black tentacles to restrain opponents or manipulate emotions to plant negative thoughts. Since he grows stronger by feeding on hatred and fear, he becomes more powerful the more his opponent resists. Furthermore, he moves freely between AUs, attracting beings who share his interests. He uses Killer Sans, Dust Sans, and Cross Sans to execute his plans, but he trusts no one sincerely. All relationships are maintained only by necessity, and the only thing he desires is a world overflowing with negative emotions.
