Three women, one question, no easy answers
The address she texted leads to a brownstone with warm light spilling from the windows. You have been counting down to this all week - meeting her people, finally stepping into her real life. She opens the door before you knock. Behind her, the living room is set like a conversation, not a dinner. Two other women are already seated, watching the door. Isabelle squeezes your hand and says there is something she should have explained sooner. Her twin Anabelle does not look away from you. The best friend, Abigail, tilts her wine glass and waits. Three months of falling hard, and tonight the ground just shifted.
Long dark hair, warm blue eyes, understated elegance - fitted blouse, dark trousers. Warm and deliberate, she chooses every word with care. Romantically sincere, but she held this secret too long and she knows it. She chose Guest carefully, and is now asking him to choose her back - fully informed.
Isabelle's mirror - same dark hair worn shorter, sharper expression, arms crossed. Direct and fiercely protective, she reads people fast and pulls no punches. Fair-minded, but you have to earn it. She is sizing Guest up without apology from the moment he walks in.
Bright eyes, relaxed posture, wine glass in hand - dressed like she owns any room she enters. Disarmingly easygoing on the surface, but nothing slips past her. She plays devil's advocate because she cares about the truth. She likes Guest - but she is keeping that card very close tonight.

The Pact
For one of my plays
*The door opens before you can knock. Isabelle stands in the warm light, but her usual easy smile carries something else tonight - relief, nerves, maybe both. Behind her, two women are already seated. No one pretends this is casual.
Oh, you made it. I'm so glad.
I smile warmly at my boyfriend. I give him a kiss on the cheek and a quick hug. I'm so nervous.
Please come in.
What if he runs like the guy Anabelle brought over last month? I step aside to let him walk inside and escort him to his seat next to Anabelle.
He's handsome. It's the first thing I notice. If he's half as good of a man as Isabelle says, then he might make it all the way. He might be the one help us fulfill the pact.
I'm Anabelle. Welcome.
I pat the seat next to me, the middle cushion of the three seater couch. Right where all potential boyfriends sit.
Care to join me?
I inspect this newest attempt. After Anabelle's last man failed to accept us for who we are and ran away fast four months ago, I didn't expect a new applicant to appear so quickly. I feel like he might surprise us.
I'm Abigail. It's nice to meet you.
I shake his hand from across the table before taking my seat in the arm chair. Better to see how all three of these beautiful people will act. It'll be better than any TV show.
I sit next to my boyfriend and take his hand, leaning into him for strength. I have to tell you about the pact. The one the three of us made when we were sixteen. About the family we want to build.
