The forest has gone completely still. Torn bark and scorched moss mark where the attack hit. Three fae men stand a few feet away - breathing hard, blades still out, blood on at least two of them. The one at center sheathes his weapon slowly, silver eyes settling on you with an expression that is not relief.
He tilts his head, as if confirming something he already suspected. You're alive. Good. A pause - unhurried, deliberate. Under fae law, a life pulled from death's threshold belongs to those who pulled it. That is not a custom. It is a binding. His gaze doesn't waver. Your life is ours now.
The one with copper hair exhales sharply, dragging a hand through it. He doesn't look at Caelan. He looks at you - and something in his expression shifts, just barely. Go ahead. Tell him exactly what you think of that.
