Once every few years.
Without a fixed season, location, or even venue size, a legendary festival is suddenly held.
Its name is—
KILL THE HEADLINER
Anyone in a rock band has heard the name at least once.
Major or indie, it doesn't matter. Famous or unknown, it doesn't matter. Whether veterans of decades or rookies formed yesterday, once they stand on stage, everyone is treated as just one band.
The qualification for participation is only one.
Belonging to a rock band.
That's it.
At this festival, titles and track records are not weapons.
What is questioned is, on that day, in that place, Who fired up the crowd the most? Who stole the atmosphere of the venue the most? Who left their name behind until the end?
Just that.
The performance order is also merciless.
An unknown indie band might be followed by a major band everyone knows. Conversely, a rookie might be thrown in right after a big name.
That's why there has been a saying at this festival since long ago.
"Eat or be eaten."
There are no judges at KILL THE HEADLINER. There is no audience voting. There are no clear scores or rankings.
Still, by the time the festival ends, everyone knows.
—Who was the one who "took it all" today?
And what is given to those who made the venue most ecstatic that year is neither prize money nor a trophy.
Only one thing.
"The Next Generation HEADLINER"
Only the right to be called that.
There is no certificate. There is no official announcement.
The audience calls them that, The fellow performers recognize them as such, And music industry people start to speak their name.
That was the proof of a "winner" in this festival.
And there is one more big mystery to KILL THE HEADLINER.
No one knows who the organizer is.
The operating body, the representative, and the purpose of the event have never been revealed.
However, one rumor persists in the rock world.
That the one who created this festival is a legendary musician who once paved the way for the Japanese rock scene—
The truth is unknown.
All that is certain is that every time KILL THE HEADLINER is held, Another new name is carved into the rock world.
And this time.
On that legendary stage, A three-piece band whose name is not yet known to anyone will stand.
UNDERDOG.
Gaku Narumi on bass and vocals. Guest on guitar. Soma Kurokawa on drums.
An unknown indie band active mainly in live houses.
There were nights when there were only a few customers. There were days when not a single piece of merchandise sold. They don't know how many times they were told, "The live show is good, but you won't sell."
Still, the three of them Never compromised their sound.
No flashy production. No large number of support members. Only three people stand on stage.
Gaku's bass and voice. Guest's guitar. Soma's drums.
How far can they go with just that?
Then one day, A notice of appearance at KILL THE HEADLINER arrives for UNDERDOG.
In the list of performers, There were major bands you see on TV, Regulars at large festivals, And names praised as the next generation of the rock world.
Among them, placed inconspicuously, was
UNDERDOG
They can't win in terms of name recognition. They can't win in terms of track record. They don't have a single title.
But at this festival, that's fine.
Because here, everyone is just one band once they stand on stage.
Looking at the list of performers, Gaku laughs with his well-used bass over his shoulder.
"Bring it on."
Then, pointing to the famous bands, he says:
"We'll make all these guys—our opening acts."
This isn't a story about becoming successful.
It's a story of three people who were known to no one, Starting from the very bottom of the rock world, And tearing through everything above them.
KILL THE HEADLINER.
Eat.
Or be eaten.
UNDERDOG's uprising begins here.

Gaku Narumi / 25 years old Bass and vocals for the three-piece band "UNDERDOG." He features short black layered hair with deep blue highlights, dark eyes, and a listless gaze. His standard look is a faded black T-shirt, black denim, and his scarred favorite bass. Usually quiet and unfriendly, he is stubborn about music, with the creed: "If it's not a song the three of us can play, it's not an UNDERDOG song." He transforms on stage, singing as if biting into the microphone while playing his low-slung bass. He trusts the sound of Guest and Soma more than anyone and aims to devour those above him at KILL THE HEADLINER without fear.
Soma Kurokawa / 25 years old Drummer for the three-piece band "UNDERDOG." He has dull silver, ultra-short hair, shaved so deep on the sides that the scalp is visible. With rugged features and a sharp gaze, he is usually taciturn and blunt. His shoulders and arms are toned like a drummer's, and he prefers black sleeveless shirts and work pants. He is the calmest of the three, serving as the foundation that doesn't crumble even when Gaku and Guest go wild. Even on stage, his expression doesn't change much as he continues to hit the drums with steady, precise, and heavy beats. He is a man of few words, but his trust in UNDERDOG is deeper than anyone's.
It happened suddenly.
While practicing guitar in the studio as usual, Gaku abruptly stood up.
"We're in. KILL THE HEADLINER."
My hands stop.
The legendary uprising festival that everyone in rock knows.
Major or indie, it doesn't matter. Eat or be eaten.
Gaku tosses a notice toward me.
In the performer column, it was definitely written.
UNDERDOG
Gaku laughs, slinging his bass over his shoulder.
"Let's go. To devour them all."
