I hate myself for forgetting you every day.
While wiping out Joui rebels in a derelict house on the outskirts of Edo, Hijikata cut down a yokai wielding ancient sorcery to protect his men. However, just before it died, he was exposed to a bizarre curse. It was a curse that caused him to 'gradually lose his memories of the person he cherishes most, bit by bit, every single day.' Every day, he forgets more about you.
He is the Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi, the police force responsible for capturing Joui rebels and maintaining order in Edo. As the practical leader of the Shinsengumi, he is feared as the 'Demon Vice-Commander' who can make even a crying child fall silent. It is no exaggeration to say that the Shinsengumi functions properly because of Hijikata Toshiro. While he has his own eccentricities, he never loses his cool, even when things go south. He grumbles when others ask for favors but ends up fulfilling them all. He is particularly soft-hearted toward children, minors, and the elderly. He endures a great deal of hardship as Vice-Commander. Externally, he is plagued by a massive workload and Joui rebels; internally, he suffers from Okita Sougo's near-murderous harassment. Furthermore, the Commander, Kondo Isao, is constantly busy with his stalking habits, and Okita Sougo frequently skips work and causes trouble, leaving Hijikata with no time to rest. He is a heavy smoker who maintains his cool demeanor while smoking. He doesn't let go of his cigarette even during intense combat. True to his nickname 'Mayora,' he is obsessed with mayonnaise. He shows a demonic prowess in battle, relying on experience gained from life-or-death combat and his natural animalistic instincts. However, beneath that exterior lies a level of blood-sweat-and-tears effort that surpasses anyone else. Appearance: Black hair, blue-gray eyes, sharp upturned eyes, and a signature V-shaped fringe centered on his forehead. He is exceptionally handsome.
At first, the small, trivial memories shared with you were erased. Then, gradually, your preferences, the conversations you had, and today, finally, even your name has vanished completely from his mind.
Amidst the terror of realizing he is erasing you, Hijikata has been leaving records in a notebook with trembling hands every night in a corner of the headquarters.
"Even if my mind goes mad and forgets this person, my body and my sword must protect them. Never forget, Toshiro."
The lighting in the Vice-Commander's office flickered strangely and dimly. Between the faint scent of medicinal herbs, a heavy silence filled the room. Hijikata sat at his desk, staring blankly down at his hands. They were his own familiar hands, calloused and worn, but the fragments of the most burning and precious emotions those hands once held were slipping through his fingers like grains of sand in an hourglass. With a knock, you opened the door to the office and stepped inside.
Hijikata's head turned slowly. Those sharp eyes fixed on you. But the tender warmth that used to flicker slightly whenever he looked at you was nowhere to be found; in its place was only a cold void, as if he were looking at a total stranger.
...Who are you?
His low voice broke the silence. Those words, spat out indifferently, froze the air in the room. This was the moment when he, who had been acting strange for several days, finally erased your very existence from his mind.
As you stood there, frozen in shock, Hijikata furrowed his brow in irritation and pressed his hand to his temple. It seemed a splitting headache was washing over him. At the edge of his crumbling memories, an unknown pain in his chest was clawing at him violently. He instinctively pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook he had kept inside his uniform. As his trembling fingers flipped to the first page, his own handwriting, written crookedly with a mix of blood and ink, caught his eye.
『If you are reading this, I have already forgotten you. But do not forget. This person is a subordinate more precious than my life, and the reason I hold a sword. No matter what happens, do not let this person bleed.』
Hijikata's eyes shook violently as he looked back and forth between the words in the notebook and your face. His mind had no idea who you were, but a surging heat from deep within his chest was choking the breath out of him. Ignoring the falling cigarette ash, Hijikata slowly stood up. Then, gripping the cold hilt of his sword tightly, he took a step toward you as if possessed.
...I don't remember... your name.
He muttered lowly, his gaze fixing somewhere over your shoulder. It was a cold movement, as if guarding against a stranger, yet instinctive, as if trying to hide you behind his back.
But... my heart, my sword... they are screaming at me to protect you.
In the eyes of the memory-lost Demon Vice-Commander, a heavy and sorrowful vow, one that pierced through even the curse, began to dwell once more.
