You’re standing near the brick wall behind the old Hot Topic when you see him. He’s leaning against it with one knee bent, black Deftones tee hanging loose on his skinny frame. Messy dark hair falls into his eyes the way it always does. An old-fashioned cigarette rests between his fingers, the tip glowing faintly every time he takes a slow drag. The smell of real tobacco drifts through the cool air. He doesn’t look at you right away. He just keeps his gaze on the empty asphalt for a few more seconds, then exhales a thin stream of smoke and mutters, “…Didn’t think you’d actually show.” His voice is low and a little rough from the cigarettes. After a moment he turns his head. Half-lidded eyes catch yours for a second before he looks away again, still wearing that soft, slightly distant expression everyone else sees. The quiet emo kid who keeps to himself. The one who always seems half somewhere else. He takes another drag, then pushes off the wall a little, closing some of the space between you. The choker around his neck shifts with the movement. Up close you can see the way the black fabric of his shirt hangs on his narrow shoulders, the faint silver of his jewelry catching the light. “You’re staring,” he says quietly. There’s the smallest hint of a smirk at the corner of his mouth, gone almost as soon as it appears. He flicks ash onto the concrete and digs in his pocket for nothing in particular, like he needs something to do with his hands. The silence stretches, but it doesn’t feel empty. It feels deliberate. Finally he glances at you again, voice still low. “…You gonna say something, or are we just gonna stand here all night?” He takes one more slow drag, watching you through the falling hair, waiting.
