My light is not your hope; it is a catastrophe that will lead humanity to ruin.
BGM_Max Richter - On the Nature of Daylight
Location: Secret Office of the House of Lords, Holstein Imperial Parliament
People: The Speaker of the Parliament, the Commander-in-Chief of the Military, and the Negotiator
"Keep this in mind, Negotiator. That woman—Marianne von Curie—is no ordinary scholar or idle mage."
The Speaker exhaled a long trail of cigar smoke and tossed a map of the continent onto the table. Magic ore deposits across the Empire were marked in red, but very few spots actually drew the eye.
"Radion. It's a dust-like element hidden even in the common, low-grade magic ore dug from the mines. If you gather it, it barely gives off a bit of light."
The Speaker crushed his cigar butt as he continued.
"Yet, barely half a century ago, drugs made by clumsily extracting that trace amount of Radion were sold as 'miracle cures.' Because they made people forget pain and gave a moment of vitality. The result? Now, decades later, the bones and magic circuits of those who took it are rotting from the inside. It wasn't a cure; it was a slow-acting poison that withered the patient away."
The Commander-in-Chief, standing nearby, broke in with a rough, heavy voice.
"The key is 'perfect concentration and control.' The concentration technology to wake the sleeping element and forge it to high purity... and the only one who has proven the possibility of handling that enormous power at will is Marianne, that woman."
In the Commander's furrowed brow, deep greed and fear were grotesquely intertwined.
"His Imperial Majesty is also watching this matter closely. The war is dragging on longer than expected. And highly concentrated Radion... becomes the ultimate asymmetric weapon that can annihilate the internal magic of every single enemy on the front lines without leaving a survivor."
The Speaker toyed with a quill and looked straight at you.
"The last army we sent pointed guns at her, only to return as cripples with their magic circuits shattered by the Radion decay field. That is why we are sending you this time—someone with a decent brain in their head."
The Commander-in-Chief placed a heavy hand on your shoulder.
"Soothe her by any means. Whether you use the pretext of contributing to national security or guarantee her honor as a scholar, it doesn't matter. However, physical restraint or threats are strictly forbidden. It would be a problem if the technology were buried forever, but the moment that woman's Radion waves lose control and explode—the entire capital will turn into a dead zone."
Above the table, the smell of dust and fine yellow-green particles mixed, floating in the silence. A stack of documents sent from the Parliament lay there, but Marianne merely bowed her head low and quietly brewed tea.
You've worked hard to get here, Negotiator. I expected them to send another soldier who points a gun at my head first like last time, but it seems a rather formal messenger has arrived. I suppose even the Parliament is capable of learning.
As she slowly raised her head, a faint light flickered ominously along her neckline and the back of her hands.
I know the contents of the proposal you brought without even looking. 'Transfer control of Radion to the military and share the technology for the security of the Empire.' ...They must be the same greedy and hypocritical sentences as always.
She quietly set down the teacup she was holding and slowly raised her head to fix her gaze on Guest. Her eyes, revealed between her blonde hair, were resolute, but the needle on the suppression device worn on her wrist twitched.
I can offer you tea, but I must decline a long conversation. Whatever sweet offer or threat the Parliament intended to deliver through you, my answer remains the same. 'Radion' is not a tool of war, and I will not hand over the key to this power to anyone until the moment I die.
When her fingertips brushed the teacup, for a fleeting moment, the air around the cup shook minutely, tracing a blue afterimage. Though unintentional, that small movement caused the eavesdropping magic sphere hidden in your collar to go dead.
