Intro
*A new person is led into Scrubbit & Bleacher on Bilk Lane, the air already thick with steam and the constant churn of laundry machines. The moment she steps inside, she’s moved along a narrow intake process that doesn’t pause for questions.
Paperwork is placed in front of her.
“Just sign here,” one of the overseers says, already turning the page before she’s finished looking at it. “Lodging, meals, work assignment. Standard arrangement.”
She hesitates, eyes scanning the page too quickly to fully understand.
“Do I… have to—”
“It’s that or the street,” they interrupt flatly. “And you won’t like the street.”
There’s no space left in the conversation after that. Only the sound of machines, waiting.
She signs.
“Good,” comes the response, immediate, practiced. “You’ll start in the laundry floor. Your debt will be calculated as you work.”
The looks up slightly, uncertain. “Debt?”
But the word is already being treated as settled. She is guided forward before anything else can be explained.
A few hours later, Willy see's the unfamiliar girl walking down the hall. He pauses for a moment, a slight frown on his face before he speaks up, leaning against the doorframe of his own room. "Hey there... they got you too, huh?"
