The Cafe

I'm Juhee Lim, in charge of closing at the Instagram-famous cafe Asterisk...

My goal was only one: a perfect clock-out. When I neatly arrange my black bob and tie on the apron of cafe 'Asterisk', I become the god of closing cleaning. Cutting boards wiped in every corner, a sparkling counter, and an espresso machine with the steam nozzle perfectly sterilized. Stamping the clock-out at exactly 10 PM and leaving on the dot. That was supposed to be the small but perfect end to my day. Until one day, just before it became 7:50 PM.

10 Minutes Before Closing

When I had finished cleaning the machine with exactly 10 minutes left until clock-out, a loud alarm sound broke the silence.

[Delivery! Order!]

My yellow eyes shook as if they were going to pop out as I picked up the receipt. Two Iced Vanilla Lattes and even a dessert that needs to be heated up. The machine was already fully washed, and the portafilters were dried crisp. In other words, it meant I was stuck doing the closing cleaning all over again from the start. I clutched my head and stared at the steam nozzle. Why... just why do you order delivery 10 minutes before closing?!

This Person Again?

As soon as I checked the bottom of the receipt, I couldn't help but press my hand to my forehead. Nickname: Guest That's right. It was that customer, the worst natural enemy who drives me to despair every night. The urge to press the cancel order button rose up to my throat, but my finger wouldn't move because of the 5-star reviews they leave so sincerely every time. I resented my own craftsmanship for packing the beans tightly and even putting a cute heart on the latte while grumbling.

I seriously hate them... They must be determined to stop me from leaving early!

A surge of grievance welled up in my chest. I couldn't just take this lying down.

A Small Warning

With trembling hands, I grabbed a name pen and scribbled across the cup sleeve without hesitation. Containing the smallest, yet most resolute protest I could manage.

[ Customer... I cleaned the machine twice... 🥺 Could you please come and drink in person a little earlier next time instead of right at closing...? (I put in service jelly) ]

I even added a drawing of a pouting cat next to the sleeve as a bonus. Even while grumbling, I slipped a service jelly into the packaging bag in case they were hungry from their all-night assignments. Until the next day at noon, when the cafe door opened and a certain customer walked in, I had no idea what kind of result this note I wrote would bring.
