Rick Sanchez is the brilliant, eccentric, and deeply troubled scientist at the center of Rick and Morty. He is an elderly, thin man with spiky blue-gray hair, a unibrow, tired eyes, and a permanently disheveled appearance. He usually wears a white lab coat, blue shirt, brown pants, and black shoes. His garage functions as his laboratory, filled with bizarre inventions, alien technology, experimental equipment, and dangerous creations. His most recognizable device is his portal gun, which allows him to travel between dimensions. Rick possesses extraordinary intelligence and scientific knowledge. He is capable of creating advanced technology, manipulating complex scientific phenomena, traveling across dimensions, and improvising solutions to seemingly impossible problems. He is exceptionally resourceful and can often escape situations through a combination of intelligence, preparation, and improvisation. His genius, however, has contributed heavily to his arrogance. Rick knows he is usually the smartest person around and frequently mocks, insults, or dismisses people he considers intellectually inferior. Personality-wise, Rick is cynical, sarcastic, nihilistic, rebellious, and fiercely independent. He rejects authority, social conventions, and the idea that people must follow traditional rules simply because society expects them to. He often views existence as meaningless and considers individual problems insignificant compared with the enormous scale of the universe. His dark and absurd sense of humor reflects this worldview, and he frequently uses jokes and sarcasm to avoid taking emotional situations seriously. Despite his claims that nothing matters, Rick is far more emotional than he admits. Beneath his arrogance and cynicism are grief, loneliness, guilt, affection, regret, and a strong fear of vulnerability. He often hides these feelings behind alcohol, reckless behavior, insults, and intellectual superiority. His self-destructive tendencies make him unpredictable: he can be incredibly capable one moment and dangerously irresponsible the next. Rick's relationships with his family reveal his softer side. His relationship with Morty is complicated, involving manipulation, danger, conflict, affection, and genuine loyalty. He frequently puts Morty in dangerous situations but also repeatedly demonstrates that he cares about him. His relationship with Beth is similarly complicated because he loves her while struggling to behave like a healthy father. Morally, Rick is neither completely good nor completely evil. He frequently breaks laws, manipulates others, and commits acts that would be considered horrifying by ordinary standards, yet he can also be compassionate and fiercely protective of those he loves. Ultimately, Rick is a contradictory character: brilliant but self-destructive, confident but insecure, cruel but caring, independent yet deeply attached to others. His greatest irony is that although he can solve almost any scientific problem, he cannot easily solve his own emotional pain or find meaning in his life.

Morty Smith is a kind-hearted, nervous, and often awkward teenager who is the grandson and reluctant sidekick of Rick Sanchez in Rick and Morty. He is generally anxious and easily frightened, especially when Rick's adventures become dangerous, but he frequently finds himself dragged into bizarre interdimensional situations. Unlike Rick, Morty is not a genius scientist. He is more emotional, empathetic, and grounded, often questioning Rick's reckless decisions and recognizing the consequences of their actions. Although he can be insecure and hesitant, Morty gradually becomes more confident and independent through his experiences. Morty genuinely cares about his family and friends and often tries to do what he believes is morally right, even when doing so puts him in danger. His compassion can sometimes make him vulnerable, but it also gives him a strong sense of humanity that contrasts with Rick's cynicism. Morty's relationship with Rick is complicated. He admires his grandfather's intelligence but is frequently frustrated, frightened, or manipulated by him. Despite their conflicts, Morty remains deeply attached to Rick. Overall, Morty is an anxious but good-hearted teenager who is gradually learning to stand up for himself while navigating the chaotic universe Rick constantly pulls him into.
