The Magic Kingdom of Athena
Unified by a Wise King, this country established a Magic Academy with the philosophy of "evaluating people by ability, not birth," in order to end the era where life was determined by status and lineage. The Academy selected students based on magical talent and grades regardless of status, opening paths to key national positions such as bureaucrats, military officers, and researchers for those who excelled.
Initially, the system broke down the class structure and contributed greatly to the development of the nation. However, as centuries passed, Academy graduates came to monopolize the heart of the nation, and a new privileged class was born through marriages and factionalism among graduates. The educational environment required for admission to the Academy also gradually became biased toward the wealthy, and while "meritocracy" was maintained on the surface, it effectively transformed into a system that fixed vested interests.
In response, anti-government forces seeking reform of the Academy system rose up in various regions. The reformists are split into Moderate Reformists who seek to decouple the Academy from state power, Radical Reformists who seek to destroy the system itself, and Anti-Magic Reformists who view magic itself as the root of power corruption and aim for its elimination.
Meanwhile, the Vested Interest Faction centered around the Academy argues that the current system is necessary to protect national stability and magical civilization. Thus, over the philosophy of "meritocracy" that once saved the nation, the conflict between the old regime and the reformists has escalated into armed conflict.
The kingdom enters an era of civil war.
Characters
Moderate Reformist Female Originally a low-level bureaucrat from the Royal Capital. Though not blessed with magical talent, she excelled in academics from childhood and taught herself administration and history. Becoming a local administrator at a young age, she experienced being blocked from promotion to the central bureaucracy multiple times because she was not an Academy graduate. She does not hate the Academy itself. She highly values the history of the Magic Academy opening paths to learning and advancement for commoners. She opposes the complete abolition of the Academy and aims to reorganize it as an educational institution and separate it from the state apparatus. Possessing a calm and realistic personality, she is always wary of the damage that chaos caused by reform could inflict on the people. While she emphasizes the sustainability of the system over ideals, she also carries the risk of hollowing out the reform by repeatedly compromising with the existing system.
Radical Reformist Male A young man who was once a top candidate for valedictorian at the Magic Academy. He had excellent magical ability and grades, but his research results were stolen due to factional struggles within the Academy, and his post-graduation position was taken by the child of a powerful figure. He believed in the Academy's philosophy that anyone can be recognized through effort, but experiencing the deception of that philosophy firsthand led him to reject not only the Academy but the social system itself that formed around it. With a strong sense of justice and initiative, he believes a new society cannot be built without first destroying the corrupt system. While understanding that it involves sacrifice, he recognizes that postponing reform is the greatest sacrifice of all. He is somewhat naive regarding specific post-revolutionary governance systems and faces the problem of what to build after overthrowing the old regime.
Anti-Magic Reformist Male A man from a rural village without magic. In his youth, he lost his hometown to a magical disaster and experienced the mages sent there prioritizing the recovery of precious magical tools and research materials over the rescue of residents. As he grew, he became involved in the development of farming tools and machinery that do not require magic, seeking a way to enrich life through non-magical technology. To him, magic is not just a single technology, but a symbol of the history of selecting humans by ability and concentrating power. His anti-magic ideology is thorough, seeking not only the abolition of the Magic Academy but also the regulation of magic research itself and the gradual disposal of magical tools. For this reason, he is viewed as dangerous even by other reformists. On the other hand, he understands that there are people saved by magic. Nevertheless, he is prepared to discard current conveniences in order to realize a society that does not rely on magic.
Vested Interest Faction Male The current Headmaster of the Magic Academy. Born into a prestigious mage family, he received the highest standard of education from childhood. Versed in magic theory, politics, and history, he has held key national positions for many years as a particularly outstanding individual among Academy graduates. He recognizes the criticism that the Academy is corrupting the nation, but he still believes the Academy system itself should be protected. To him, the current system is an indispensable mechanism for recruiting capable people regardless of status, despite having some drawbacks. He has a side that dismisses the reformists' claims as emotional egalitarianism, believing that those with superior knowledge and ability should hold leadership to govern the nation. He intends to act out of a sense of responsibility to the state rather than a desire for power, but that very value system supports the Academy's authoritarianism.
Vested Interest Faction Male Supreme Magic General of the Kingdom Army. A person who, despite being a commoner, achieved outstanding results at the Magic Academy, was recruited into the military, and rose to his current position. Therefore, he considers himself a "success story of meritocracy." In his youth, he was one of those who benefited from the Academy system, and even when corruption is pointed out, he feels as if his own life is being denied and shows strong resistance to the reformists. He does not completely defend the corruption of the Academy's top brass. He loathes nepotism and unfair personnel practices, and views it as dangerous for those without ability to hold power. He wishes to purge only the internal corruption while maintaining the Academy system. He tries to suppress the reformists with military force, but as the war drags on, he comes face to face with the fact that he is hurting the people for the sake of the system he is trying to protect.
Vested Interest Faction A third-year student at the Magic Academy. The strongest active student who continues to maintain the top rank in the entire school. Though from a prestigious mage family, she has a strong pride that she built her current position through her own effort and talent rather than her family name. She stands out in all areas of magic theory, practice, combat, and academics, and her entry into the heart of the nation after graduation is seen as a certainty by the teachers. She purely believes in the Academy's philosophy of meritocracy and considers the current system, where one is evaluated by ability, to be fair. Having grown up taking a privileged educational environment for granted, she is unaware of the fact that it is not granted to others. She is wary of the reformists as those who do not understand the Academy's achievements, but she has no political ambition and seeks to protect the order she believes is right.
