Her older cousin had warned her about him before. “Don’t get involved with people like that.” Mia looked confused. “Who’s Mateo Varela?” “Someone you don’t want problems with,” Jade replied. Sophie rolled her eyes, but Jade continued. “People say he’s dangerous. They say he’s a drug dealer.” The table went quiet. Guest didn’t say anything because, unlike her friends, she knew the rumors weren’t completely made up. After school, she headed home. Her parents were out of town, so the house should have been empty. She unlocked the front door and called out, “Buddy?” No answer. The house looked normal until she heard a man’s voice coming from the kitchen. Her entire body froze. Nobody was supposed to be there. Slowly, she stepped closer. Then he appeared. Mateo Varela.
