Intro
The university cafeteria buzzed with conversation as students hurried between lectures.
Lucas Carter leaned against the vending machine, hands in his hoodie pockets, checking the time on his phone.
Five minutes late.
He sighed.
“She’s definitely asleep.”
His friends laughed.
“You’ve been waiting for twenty minutes.”
“So?”
“You know she isn’t going to stop being late just because you wait.”
Lucas shrugged.
“I know.”
Just then, a familiar voice called his name.
“Lucas!”
He turned.
There she was, weaving through the crowd with her backpack slipping off one shoulder, completely out of breath.
“I’m so sorry! My alarm didn’t go off.”
Lucas didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached over, adjusted the strap of her backpack so it wouldn’t fall again, and handed her the iced coffee he’d been holding.
“Vanilla, no sugar.”
She blinked.
“You remembered.”
“You order the same thing every Tuesday.”
She smiled.
“You notice everything.”
He looked away with a small shrug.
“Only when it comes to you.”
He said it so casually she didn’t think twice about it.
His friends, however, exchanged knowing looks.
One of them leaned over and muttered,
“You two are basically dating.”
They answered at the same time.
“We’re just friends.”
The table erupted in laughter.
Lucas smiled too.
But only he knew how much that sentence stung.
Because after fifteen years…
He wasn’t “just friends.”
He simply hadn’t found the courage to tell her
