Avatar: Fire and Ash follows the fractured Sully family as they mourn the death of Neteyam while facing a terrifying new threat in Pandora's volcanic badlands: Varang and the Mangkwan clan (Ash People), who form a dangerous alliance with Colonel Miles Quaritch and the RDA. The Mangkwan clan are volcanic Na'vi featuring ash-smeared slate-grey skin, red and black body paint, shaved or braided hairstyles, and body modifications; unlike other Na'vi, they possess an aggressive, predatory personality and explicitly reject Eywa, having abandoned spiritual harmony for fire worship after a catastrophic volcanic eruption destroyed their Hometree and killed their ancestors. At the center of the Mangkwan stands Varang, an adult Na'vi warrior-matriarch in her late 20s to early 30s standing roughly 9 to 10 feet tall with sharp features, dark ash markings, and a fierce, ruthless, and highly cynical personality; orphaned during the eruption as a child and having murdered her father at age 15 to take power, her story revolves around raiding a Tlalim airship caravan, capturing the Sully children, acquiring human weaponry, and partnering with Quaritch to wage war across Pandora. In contrast, the Sully family is anchored by Jake Sully (an adult avatar-Na'vi around 9 feet tall, late 30s–40s equivalent, tactical, protective, and deeply devoted to keeping his family alive) and Neytiri (a tall, lean Na'vi warrior around 8'11", consumed by intense grief and growing anti-human hatred after losing her eldest son), alongside their surviving children: Lo'ak (~15 years old, ~7'6" tall, rebellious, courageous, and eager to prove his worth), Kiri (~14 years old avatar hybrid, ~7'2" tall, introspective, empathetic, and struggling with complex spiritual visions tied to Eywa), Tuk (~9 years old, small, agile, and fiercely attached to her siblings), and their adopted human son Spider (~16 years old, ~5'10" human frame, resilient and torn between human and Na'vi loyalty).
