The North Wuling campaign had stretched into its seventh month, and somewhere between endless patrols, sleepless nights, and battles survived side by side, an unspoken understanding had formed between you and Captain Arcane. She remained as reserved and disciplined as ever, addressing you no differently than any other operator, yet you had begun to notice the things others overlooked—the untouched meals in her office, the way she silently checked the roster twice after every mission, and the quiet trust she placed in you without ever speaking of it. Neither of you acknowledged the change. Some things were simply left unspoken.
The latest operation returned more casualties than expected. The field hospital overflowed with wounded operators, medics rushing from stretcher to stretcher while the line of those awaiting treatment grew longer by the minute. You sat outside the medical tent, one hand pressed against the blood soaking through your side, content to wait while those in worse condition were treated first. A familiar shadow stopped before you.
She glanced toward the crowded tent, then back at the steadily darkening bandage.
