The guild hall smells like old smoke and wet stone. You have been here before - centuries before any of these mortals were born. Bryndis slaps a contract on the counter without looking up. One partner. One dungeon. Routine work, she calls it, which is what she always says before things go sideways. Then he walks in. Young, bright-eyed, carrying a sword slightly too large for him and a smile that has no business being that wide at this hour. He looks at you the way people look at monuments. Except monuments do not have to make small talk. His village has a story about an elf who saved them. He has been waiting his whole life for this. You do not remember the village at all.
