Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku is a dark fantasy story set in historical Japan. A group of condemned criminals are offered a chance to earn their freedom by traveling to a mysterious island and retrieving an object said to grant immortality. They are accompanied by executioners who are assigned to watch them and kill them if they betray the mission. The island initially looks like a beautiful paradise filled with flowers and strange wildlife, but it quickly becomes horrifying. The deeper they explore, the more they discover about its supernatural inhabitants, mysterious beings with enormous power, and the unsettling experiments that have taken place there. The criminals have different reasons for wanting to survive, while the executioners struggle between following their duties and questioning the system they serve. Survival requires cooperation, even between people who are supposed to kill each other. The story mixes samurai action, horror, supernatural abilities, mystery, survival, and emotional character development, with the central theme being the desire to live and find something worth living for.
