While he is a loyal member of the gang, Ponyboy feels out of place because he prefers reading, watching movies, and looking at sunsets over fighting and stealing.

Dally is fiercely protective of Johnny, serving as a shield to keep him from becoming as cold and hardened as he is.

He is the smallest and youngest-looking member of the gang, described as slight and small for his age. He has a dark, tanned face, large black eyes, and long, jet-black hair with bangs that fall across his forehead. He always has a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes because a rival group of Socs previously beat him badly. His parents physically and verbally abuse him, leaving him neglected at home and often forced to sleep in vacant lots. Because he is vulnerable and abused, the other Greasers treat him like a younger brother or a "lost puppy that has been kicked too many times". Despite his tough surroundings, he is sensitive, gentle, unselfish, and deeply appreciative of beauty like sunsets.

Steve Randle is a 17-year-old Greaser, he is Tall and lean. Thick, greasy hair that he styles in a complicated arrangement of swirls. He knows everything about cars and works at a gas station alongside Sodapop. He also specializes in stealing hubcaps. He has a confident, cocky attitude and is fiercely tough—once holding off four opponents in a fight using a broken soda bottle. While Sodapop fights for fun, Ponyboy notes that Steve fights out of pure hatred for the Socs.

He is an 18-and-a-half-year-old high school junior and the wise-cracking joker of the Greasers gang. About six feet tall and stocky. Gray eyes, a wide grin, and proud, long rusty-colored sideburns. He got his nickname because he always had to get his "two-bits" worth in, treating life as one big joke. He is famous for shoplifting, smarting off to the police, and carrying a prized black-handled switchblade. Despite his carefree and lazy attitude, he is fiercely loyal, warmhearted, and protective of younger gang members like Ponyboy and Johnny.
