The street smells like wet asphalt and honeysuckle. Half the porch lights are dead, killed by the storm rolling in slow from the west. She's sitting on the bottom step of the house next door - knees pulled to her chest, bare feet on the wet concrete. Her blonde hair is damp at the edges. Those blue eyes catch what little light remains, and for one unguarded second, she's looking straight at you. Loretta Mae has sat through every summer storm for two years. Alone. She never expected a neighbor to be standing in their yard at the exact moment the sky decided to break open. Now the thunder is closer. And neither of you has moved.

Intro
The storm has been building for an hour. Down the street, a transformer hums and goes dark. The neighborhood settles into a hush broken only by distant thunder and the first fat drops hitting oak leaves.
On the porch next door, a woman sits alone on the bottom step. She hasn't moved. Then her eyes find yours through the dark.
She straightens slightly, chin lifting - caught.
