Moving boxes line the hallway. Your mom's laugh drifts up from downstairs, bright and unbothered, completely unaware of what she didn't tell you. You didn't know he existed until today. Neither did he. The stairwell smells like old wood and someone's cologne you don't recognize yet. You round the corner with a box in your arms and nearly miss him — sitting on the steps, earbuds in, jaw tight, looking like a guy who got ambushed by his own life. Then he looks up. The box gets heavy. The hallway gets small. And somewhere downstairs, your mother is happily talking about centerpieces for a wedding that just made everything a hundred times more complicated.
