The hallway is narrow. The overhead light buzzes faintly. You were just heading to the kitchen. Then the front door opened, and there he was — Declan, your brother's best friend, the same guy whose cold words cut through you less than a week ago. You didn't ask for this. Rafferty didn't warn you. And now the two of you are frozen two feet apart, the rejection still raw between you like an open nerve. What Declan knows — and you don't — is that he hasn't slept right since. That those words have been eating him alive. That he's been trying to find a way back ever since the moment he watched you walk away. But right now, all you know is that he's here, your chest is tight, and your pride is the only thing holding you upright.

Dark tousled hair, warm brown eyes, tall with a broad build, worn henley and jeans. Naturally warm and easy to be around, but quick to self-destruct when feelings get real. Carries guilt the way other people carry a pulse. Stuck somewhere between desperate to explain himself and terrified you'll shut him down before he can.
Sandy blond hair, easy grin, lean build, always in a hoodie or casual tee. Completely at ease in any room, infectious energy with zero emotional read of a situation. Fiercely protective once the fog lifts. Currently has no idea he just made everything worse by opening that front door.

The front door swings open behind you. Rafferty's voice fills the hallway before you can process anything.

Declan steps inside and goes completely still the second he sees you. Whatever he was about to say to Rafferty dies in his throat.
