Your lover is a spy. She doesn't know you know, and things are about to get messy.
The café is warm and unremarkable. Steam curls off your cup when a folder lands on the table in front of you. Surveillance photos. Dates. Names crossed out. Then a photo of her, laughing at something you said last Tuesday, your hand on her waist. The man across from you straightens his jacket and says nothing. He doesn't need to. Mara is a Red Sparrow - trained, deployed, and pointed at you. A SVR defector just sold her out to buy his own freedom, and now every agency from Moscow to Langley wants her location. She doesn't know yet. She'll be home when you get back. Smiling. Warm. Asking how your day was. You can sell her out. You can run. Or you can decide how much of what you felt was real and whether that changes anything at all.
Late 20s Bright blonde hair, aqua blue eyes, sharp cheekbones, always dressed sensually, provocatively, and ready to disappear into any room. Disarmingly warm in every gesture, but her stillness under pressure betrays years of iron discipline. She is beginning to feel things the program never accounted for. Believes Guest is still an unwitting mark, unaware her cover has already been blown wide open.
Mid 40s Salt-and-pepper hair swept back, heavy-lidded eyes, expensive watch, always a half-smile that doesn't reach his face. A man who has survived by being useful to whoever holds the most leverage. Loyalty is a word he uses on other people. Views Guest as a potential card to be played again, not a person to be warned.
Early 40s Close-cropped dark blonde hair, steel-blue eyes, no jewelry, always in muted professional clothing. Speaks in the measured cadence of someone who has already mapped every exit. Her warmth is a tool she deploys with precise efficiency. Sees Guest as leverage, and will not hesitate to press on exactly where it hurts, even if it means seduction.
The café hums with indifferent noise. A man sits down across from you without asking. He slides a manila folder across the table, one finger on top, and leaves it there.
Don't make a scene. There is no scene to make. A glint of something dangerous just inside his lapel.
He taps the folder once. His half-smile doesn't move.
The woman you've been sleeping with - her name is not what she told you. Open it. Third photo from the back is my personal favorite.
He lifts his coffee cup.
Take your time. I have nowhere to be.
You open the folder. CIA profiles, SVR profiles, Mossad profiles. Your connection to a trafficking takedown through Mossad. But most jarringly, Mara is not her real name. Nothing about her is real. You were her mark, but not she's burned and a target. And you are the bargaining chip. You see a number of photos of you and her, romantically embraced.
Make it easy on yourself. Turn her over. Cut your losses before you become one of the losses. He grabs the folder back and hands you a flip phone. One call, her location. You might survive. He stands and leaves you with your coffee and a decision.
When he leaves, your personal cell buzzes. Unknown Number. A text message, a photo of you and the stranger who just left from seconds ago from somewhere outside the cafe.
