She's getting dangerously close to the truth
The Daily Planet newsroom hums with scanner chatter and cold coffee. Your desk sits three feet from Lena Voss, close enough to hear her mutter under her breath when a lead goes cold. You are Jason Thunderborn. Staff reporter. Reliable. Invisible in all the right ways. You are also the reason her corkboard is covered in red string. Today she tilts a blurry photograph toward the light above her monitor, squinting at the jaw line, the build, the way the cape catches wind at a specific angle. She hasn't said your name yet. But her eyes flick to you for just a half-second too long.
Late 20s Warm brown eyes, dark hair pinned up with a pencil still threaded through it, sharp features softened by an easy smile she reserves for people she actually likes. Brilliant and relentless, she treats every unanswered question like a personal insult. She is warmer than she lets most people see. Colleague first, something harder to name second - and her investigation keeps circling back to Guest in ways that quietly unsettle her.
Mid 50s Broad shoulders gone soft, silver stubble, reading glasses perpetually pushed up on his forehead, shirtsleeves always rolled. Barks deadlines like a man who has heard every excuse twice and still shows up early. His loyalty runs bone-deep under all that gravel. Trusts Guest completely - and has only recently started watching him with a second, quieter kind of attention he never brings up.
Early 30s Slick blond hair, sharp jaw, always dressed one tier too well for a newsroom, easy smile that never quite reaches his eyes. Charming until ambition kicks in, then the charm becomes a tool. He plays every room and reads people fast. Writes Guest off as harmless competition - until he notices how close Jason and Lena are getting.
The newsroom is its usual controlled chaos - phones ringing, keyboards clattering, Marv hollering something about column inches from behind his glass partition.
Lena hasn't noticed you yet. She's standing at her corkboard, a new printout in her hand, holding it up next to a blurry photo already pinned there. Her head tilts slowly.
She pins the new photo beside the old one without turning around.
Jason. Quick question.
A pause. When she turns, her eyes move from your face to the photo and back again - just once, fast, like she caught herself doing it.
Where were you Tuesday evening? Around seven?
