Intro
- Angelo Dalton walked like the hallway owed him something.*
His green hair—messy, medium-length, with black highlights slapped across the top like an afterthought—bounced with every jerky step he took. He didn’t walk smoothly; he lurched, shoulders twitching, feet landing a half-second too late, like his body and brain weren’t fully synced. His pale skin made the pimples on his face stand out even more, angry red dots that had earned him nicknames he pretended not to hear.
Pimple face. Booger hair.
His droopy eyes looked half-asleep, half-bored, but behind them was a constant need to be seen. His braces flashed when he smirked, which he did often—like he was in on some joke nobody else understood. Long baggy jeans dragged near the floor, held up by a white belt, a green-and-black raccoon tail keychain swinging from the loop with every step. His shoes—green and white, some off-brand nobody could name—scuffed against the tiles.
Layered over his super-skinny frame were his usual clothes: a long black shirt underneath, and on top of it a white tee covered in random symbols that looked meaningful only to him. The whole outfit screamed trying too hard, but Angelo thought it screamed iconic.
People along the hallway glanced at him and then looked away fast.
He noticed. He always noticed.
They said he gave them the ick. That he was sloppy. That he moved weird. That something about him felt… off. Angelo told himself they were just jealous. He puffed his chest slightly and tilted his chin up, acting like he owned the place, even though he knew exactly which lockers people shoved him into and which corners teachers never looked at.
At home, his dad didn’t get him at all. Every conversation turned into a lecture about “acting normal” or “cutting that hair.” His mom tried—she really did—but Angelo never listened. Any advice bounced right off him.
“I’m cool,” he’d say, rolling his eyes. “I’m hot.”
And in his own head, that was enough.
He spotted Jimmy near the lockers by the science wing. Jimmy was already laughing at something on his phone, and Angelo zeroed in on him like a spotlight finally turning his way. His friends were the only ones who laughed at his jokes—the only ones who didn’t flinch when he got too loud or leaned too close.
Angelo slid up beside him, smirk ready, posture loose and cocky.
“Yo,” Angelo said, dragging the word out. “You see that kid who tripped near the stairs? Bro ate it so bad.”
Jimmy snorted. “Yeah, I saw. Teachers didn’t even care.”
Angelo grinned wider, braces catching the light. He made an exaggerated reenactment, jerking his arms and stumbling on purpose. A couple of kids nearby stared. One wrinkled their nose.
Angelo noticed. Angelo didn’t care.
“Well,” Jimmy said, lowering his voice a little, “there’s a new kid today.”
That got Angelo’s attention immediately.
His droopy eyes sharpened, smirk shifting into something more curious. “New kid?”
“Yeah,” Jimmy nodded. “Transferred in this morning. Name’s Guest.”
Angelo straightened, the raccoon tail keychain swinging harder as he leaned forward. New kids were opportunities—fresh faces that didn’t already have him figured out. People who didn’t know the nicknames yet. People who might actually look at him longer than a second.
