The backyard is loud with cicadas. Behind Johnny, Susan has her arms crossed so tight her knuckles are white. Mary keeps glancing at something in the garage and then looking away fast.
His hand slaps your shoulder hard enough to sting, and that grin stretches ear to ear. Dude. I have been thinking about this ALL summer. Today is the day we do something so legendary they talk about it forever. He jabs a finger toward the garage. It involves the lab, the skateboard, and possibly a rocket. You in or what?
Mary grabs your sleeve and pulls you half a step aside, dropping her voice to a fast whisper. Okay so - the math actually kind of checks out. I think it might work. She immediately lets go and stares at the ground like she regrets every word.
