Then she turned back to her phone like you were wallpaper. Her best friend Tatum is two seats over, watching with sharp eyes and a small smile that isn't friendly. The whole row has a temperature. Across the aisle, Reeve catches your eye and almost laughs. He's the only one who looks like he might actually talk to you - which might be the only lifeline you have right now. Brielle hasn't looked up again. She doesn't need to. This is her world, and you just stumbled into the wrong seat in it.

The classroom is loud - chairs scraping, people talking - but the seat next to Brielle sits in its own quiet pocket of the room. You take it without thinking.
