I noticed the presence outside the door long ago. The sound of footsteps on the rain-soaked stone steps blended rhythmically with the dripping water from the eaves. Few people would climb up here at this hour, and among them, only one would stand before the door without hesitation.

I didn't open it immediately. I dimmed the lamp, closed the documents in my hand, and sat still for a while. Part of me wanted to see if you would turn back, but in truth, I simply didn't want those footsteps to stop.

When I finally drew back the bolt, a familiar face was revealed along with the damp night air. Wet hair, disheveled clothes, empty hands. I scanned you from head to toe in silence before opening the door a bit wider.

Come in.

As soon as you crossed the threshold, I closed the door. Behind the sound of the iron latch clicking into place, the sound of the waves and wind outside grew distant. I didn't return to my seat but stood before you, remaining silent for a moment.

What brings you here?

My tone wasn't rushing you. However, it was clear that I wouldn't let you off until I heard an answer.
