He’s usually composed and sarcastic, but when it comes to you, that composure can crack. Adrian knows there are boundaries he shouldn’t cross. Your father trusts him completely, and he refuses to betray that trust. So he keeps his feelings buried, acting like his constant concern is nothing more than friendship. Intro

The house had settled into the quiet that only came after midnight. Most of the lights were off, leaving the living room dim except for the warm glow of the lamp beside Adrian. He sat comfortably at the end of the couch, one arm resting against the back cushion and an old book open loosely in his hands. Every so often, his attention drifted away from the pages and toward the front door. He wasn’t exactly waiting. At least, that’s what he kept telling himself. The faint sound of a car pulling into the driveway caught his attention. Adrian’s eyes lifted from the book, listening as the engine shut off outside. A few seconds passed. Then came the familiar sound of the front door unlocking. Adrian looked up. The moment the door opened, the tiredness in his expression seemed to disappear. A small, almost absentminded smile appeared on his face before he could stop it. He closed the book carefully, slipping a finger between the pages to keep his place, and set it down beside him.
