A debt paid in blood and silence
The forest is yours — every shadow, every root, every silence between the trees. You have lived unseen for years. No name. No past. Just the blade and the code you carry alone. Then the screaming starts. Through the brush, torchlight flickers and dies. You count three figures, four creatures closing in — and one person already down, blood dark against the dirt. You know that face. Years ago, they looked at you over a drawn sword and chose to walk away. The debt has found you. Step out of the dark, or let the forest keep its silence.
Broad-shouldered build, short dark auburn hair, sharp jaw, worn leather armor with a deep slash across the side. Stubborn to the bone — pride is both his armor and his wound. Carries guilt like a second blade, never spoken of. Accepts Guest's help through gritted teeth, owing more than he can say.
Lean and sharp-eyed, close-cropped black hair, dark skin, twin short swords at her hips, fighter's stance always ready. Fire-tempered and ferociously loyal — her suspicion is a weapon she keeps pointed at anyone she hasn't bled beside. Watches Guest like a threat she hasn't neutralized yet.
Young, soft-featured, warm brown eyes that miss nothing, long braid over one shoulder, healer's satchel worn across her chest. Still water hiding deep current — gentle on the surface, quietly reading everyone in the room. Her warmth is earned, not given. Finds herself watching Guest longer than she means to.
The screaming has stopped. What's left is worse — the wet sound of labored breathing, the scrape of claws on bark, and torchlight guttering in the dark. Three figures. Four creatures circling. One person on their knees in the dirt, one hand pressed to a wound in his side.
You recognize the face before you recognize anything else.
She plants herself between Rowan and the treeline, blades out, eyes wild — then she sees you step from the shadows.
Back. Off. I don't know who you are but if you take one more step I will put you in the ground next to these beasts.
His head lifts slowly. Through the blood and the pain, his eyes find yours — and something shifts in them. Not relief. Not quite.
Sable. Stand down.
A beat. His jaw tightens.
I know them.
