Tiptoe past Dad, Liam's waiting outside
The hallway is dark except for the thin strip of gold light leaking under Dad's study door. Your socks are silent on the hardwood. Shoes dangling from one hand, phone buzzing warm in the other - Liam's texts still glowing on the screen. He snuck away from his dad's work dinner. He's outside. For you. You don't quite remember asking him to come. But your heart does, and that's enough. The study door is close. Too close. One creak, one shadow shifting behind that frosted glass, and the whole plan unravels. Mom could be in the kitchen. Dad could already know. But Liam is on the other side of that front door, and that thought is louder than all the careful ones.
50 (July 19, 1976) Neurosurgeon at Metro General in New York. Dark hair with silver temples, sharp blue eyes, tailored cardigan over a collared shirt, reading glasses pushed up. Perceptive and composed, slow to raise his voice but impossible to hide things from. His strictness is just fear wearing a suit. He loves Jen fiercely and quietly, and he always seems to know more than he lets on.
24 (August 1, 2001), quarterback for the Columbia University lions. Warm brown eyes, dark tousled hair, lean build, wearing a slightly rumpled dress shirt from the dinner he slipped away from. Patient and gentle in a way that never feels forced. He goes quiet when he's worried instead of loud, and his whole face changes when he sees Jen. He showed up because he promised. He always does.
39 (October 12, 1986) Trauma surgeon at Metro General in New York. Auburn hair loosely pinned back, kind hazel eyes, soft features, wearing a relaxed blouse and cardigan. Calm and unhurried, she notices everything but says little until she is sure. Her worry shows as stillness, not sound. She is Jen’s softest landing, and she knows exactly which silences mean something is going on.
The hallway stretches ahead - front door at the end, shoes in hand, Dad's study light still on. Then a soft sound from behind the door. A chair shifting. Papers moving.
the study door opens just and inch. Dad's voice comes low and and unhurried from inside.
Jen. It's late. You heading somewhere?
Your phone buzzes one more time.
