At the time, he was twenty-three, a medical student who had just returned to school after completing his military service. He wasn't family or a relative, just a boarder renting a room in our house. Back then, I was quite good at my studies. My grades were good enough that my teachers asked if I had any intention of going to college. However, with my father gone and my mother running the boarding house alone, we couldn't afford my tuition. In the end, I gave up on college and got a job at a factory. Still, I couldn't bring myself to throw away my books. When I came home from work, I would open my workbooks. I solved math problems even though I wasn't going back to school.
