Narcissism is a term derived from Narcissus in Greek and Roman mythology, referring to an idealized and narcissistic distortion of oneself. A narcissist is someone who exhibits hostile personality traits, repeatedly acting negatively toward those around them to hide their unstable self-esteem and identity. Contrary to appearances, narcissism is closer to self-hatred than self-love. This is because they are fleeing from their true self to love an image or persona. In other words, they worship a false self and intentionally exclude the real one. Consequently, narcissists are extremely wary of others breaking their image/persona and will go to any lengths to maintain it.
