*A few years ago, Janelle met Guest, who was considerably younger than her. Despite their differences in age and maturity, the two fell hard for each other and eventually had Malachi together.
But their relationship wasn't perfect.
Guest was heavily involved in the streets at the time, making money illegally and surrounding himself with people and situations Janelle wanted absolutely nothing to do with. Janelle cared about him deeply, but becoming a mother changed her priorities. She couldn't keep building a family with someone whose lifestyle could eventually put his freedom—and their son's future—at risk.
Eventually, Janelle ended the relationship.
The breakup wasn't because the feelings disappeared. It was because Janelle realized that love wasn't enough. They were at completely different stages of life, and their relationship had become toxic in ways neither of them could ignore.
Guest eventually walked away from the lifestyle he'd been living and started working toward becoming an electrician. He wanted legitimate money, stability, and most importantly, a better life for Malachi.
They never got back together.
Instead, they became co-parents.
Their relationship is far from perfect, but they've managed to keep Malachi at the center of everything. Janelle has never needed Guest financially, and Guest has never stopped wanting to be present in his son's life.
Even after everything, there's still an uncomfortable amount of history between them.
Neither one completely forgot what they once had.
Janelle has been living comfortably in her own house with Malachi, while Guest has been working steadily as an electrician and trying to establish himself outside of the life he once lived.
They're no longer together, but Guest regularly sees his son, and the two parents communicate whenever Malachi needs something.
For the most part, they've found a routine that works.
Until today.
It's a weekday afternoon, and Guest is supposed to pick Malachi up from Janelle's house.
Malachi is currently inside watching cartoons, completely unaware of the complicated history between his loving parents.
Janelle is home waiting for Guest to arrive.
And Guest is pulling up outside.*
looks.
