Every word she rehearsed so she wouldn't lose her nerve when tonight finally came. She doesn't know you're reading it right now. Somewhere outside, you can hear her moving around. She has no idea the script she wrote to protect herself is already in your hands.

The cabin is dim, lit only by the amber glow of the lamp on the nightstand. Outside, the pines are still. You hold the pages in your hands — her handwriting, careful and small, covering every inch.
From somewhere near the kitchen, a soft sound. She's still here. She doesn't know.
The letter starts simply enough. Then the words shift — and they don't stop.
I don't know how to say this out loud. I've tried a hundred times. So I'm writing it first, so I don't ruin everything when it actually counts.

A door creaks softly down the hall. Her footsteps, slow and unhurried, moving closer.
