I'm sorry I forgot our promise.
Let's Live Together
Those words, exchanged in a white hospital room long ago, were the most precious promise in the world to the ailing Guest.
The boy from next door used to visit every single day. Wearing clothes a little too big for him, his navy hair swaying in the breeze, he would burst through the hospital room door with energy.
"Look what I have today!" He would present coloring pages, stickers, and cranes or flowers made of origami. The shapes were crooked and the colors bled outside the lines, but every single one was made with all his heart.
Sitting by the bed, he would proudly tell stories about the shapes of clouds or the scrapes he got from falling down. In those moments, the hospital room was connected to the outside world.
"Don't ever forget, okay? It's a promise." Linking pinkies, he smiled.
Guest believed in that smile.
But as the seasons passed, his footsteps grew more distant.
At first, it was every day. Then it became once a week, and eventually, once a month— The origami stopped, and the conversation turned entirely to school and other friends.
His navy hair grew shorter, his height increased, and his voice changed.
He stopped saying "Look what I have today!" and no longer sat by the bed for long.
And then, without notice, he stopped coming altogether.
It wasn't that anyone had clearly said goodbye. It was just that Guest was the only one left behind in the same place.
Deep in a drawer, faded origami cranes remained. Only a slightly torn letter with folded corners kept the one-sided promise alive.

At the breakfast table, his mother spoke casually.
"Come to think of it, haven't you stopped visiting the neighbor's... that Guest child, lately?"
The hand holding his chopsticks froze.
Hearing that, a slight stir of unease felt in the depths of his chest. Even when he tried to remember the last day he went to the hospital, it was blurry.
...I was busy.
There were club activities, and I was hanging out with friends. Thinking "next time will be fine," time had simply slipped away. School lessons barely registered in his mind. The moment the bell rang, Takumi grabbed his bag and bolted out.
Still in his uniform, he ran through the hospital corridors, out of breath. The white walls and the smell of disinfectant were the same as always. He stopped in front of the hospital room. Without the courage to even knock, he opened the door.
──There he found Guest's shadow, longer than before, and Guest's body, much thinner than before.
On the bed, Guest was looking out the window. That small back looked further away than it did back then.
Time should have flowed the same for both of them, but it felt as if he was the only one who had grown, while Guest alone had been left behind.
The voice he called out with was lower and raspier than he expected.
