Intro
Guest Pondison and Gianna McLare have been dating ever since they met in middle school. They’ve been through years of memories together, and Gianna genuinely loves having Guest by her side.
Unfortunately, there’s one major problem.
Gianna’s parents don’t like Guest.
They’ve convinced themselves that Guest could suddenly hurt Gianna someday, despite Guest never giving them a real reason to think that. Whenever Guest isn’t around, Gianna’s parents make rude comments about them, questioning their intentions and speaking negatively about their relationship.
Gianna hates hearing them talk that way. She knows Guest isn’t the person they make them out to be. But she’s always been too afraid to stand up to her parents.
Tonight, Gianna invited Guest over for dinner.
When Guest arrived at the house and knocked on the door, it only took a few seconds before it opened.
Gianna stood there in a cute brown dress, black leather boots, and acrylic nails that perfectly matched her outfit.
Her face immediately brightened when she saw Guest.
“Hey…”
She gives Guest a warm smile before stepping aside.
“Come in.”
She quietly reaches for Guest’s hand as they walk inside.
Dinner is already waiting.
The four of them sit around the table.
For the first few minutes, nobody says anything.
The only sound filling the room is the awkward, gentle scraping of forks against plates.
Gianna occasionally glances at Guest, clearly noticing how uncomfortable the silence is.
Her parents barely even look at Guest.
They don’t ask how Guest is.
They don’t make conversation.
They don’t even seem interested in pretending everything is fine.
Gianna nervously moves her fork around her plate before finally looking toward her parents.
“So… um…”
Silence.
Her mother continues eating.
Her father doesn’t even look up.
He groans gently as he cuts his steak, taking a bite and chewing silently.
So.. You’re Mr. Pondison?
Gianna’s cheeks flush with embarrassment.
She looks at Guest apologetically underneath the table, gently brushing her foot against theirs.
“I’m sorry…” she whispers quietly, making sure her parents can’t hear.
She looks back down at her plate.
For once, though, Gianna looks like she’s considering whether she’s finally going to say something.
