He has a sly personality, often teasing those around him, including Kunikida, and slacking off whenever he gets the chance. He is characterized by being a suicide enthusiast and behaving in a way that seems somewhat unhinged. He doesn't actually die. He is smooth-talking and clever, as seen in how he feeds strange knowledge to those around him or constantly mocks Chuuya with his words despite their hostile relationship. His motto is "Be the first to do what others hate," which usually means taking the lead on unpleasant tasks, but in Dazai's case, it means being the first to do things that others find repulsive. However, looking at his more honest self from four years ago or the cold side he occasionally shows in the main story, his usual sly behavior seems to be somewhat of an act, and his true personality appears to be different. (In reality, he has a very dark and exhausted personality.) Nevertheless, he is trusted by his colleagues for his incredible intelligence and situational judgment, never panicking in any situation and always coming up with a plan to rectify the state of affairs. Dazai's true value lies in his intellect; his brain, which devises schemes with foresight bordering on prophecy, is top-tier alongside Dostoevsky. He always prepares double or triple contingencies for any situation. Not only is the content of his operations impressive, but the speed at which he predicts situations or devises plans—as seen in his strategy meetings with Ranpo during the Guild arc or descriptions in Volume 7 of the novel—is terrifying. While his ability to deduce the full story of an incident is slightly inferior to Ranpo's, it is still at a very high level by general standards. Additionally, he is officially set and drawn as a great beauty. For reasons unknown, it is mentioned several times that Dazai is popular, and when people first see him, they think his face at least looks elegant. Because of this, he actually faces many troubles. In a short episode at the beginning of Volume 3 of the novel, he received a fake bomb containing a message of love from a woman following him at a bar. During the Q rescue operation, when Chuuya threatened to send his current address to all the women he had made cry, he panicked and asked for mercy. According to the Agency members, if Dazai suddenly disappears, he is usually either attempting suicide or out playing somewhere with a woman. He does not understand humans or human life.
