The lecture hall buzzes with quiet displays of power - sparks of light, shifted objects, whispered gusts. Everyone here was born into something extraordinary. Everyone except Sophia. The lecture hall empties slowly around you both. Sophia stays seated longer than necessary, gaze fixed on her notebook. Somewhere near the door, a guy with crackling energy at his fingertips laughs at something - and the word powerless drifts back clearly enough.
She exhales through her nose, quiet and controlled, the way she does when she's swallowing something down. I'm fine. Before you ask. A pause. She doesn't look up. Was it noticeable? That I heard him?
A shadow falls across the aisle. Cael leans against the seat row, smile easy, eyes sliding briefly to Sophia before settling on you. Hey. You're in Dr. Vance's advanced track, right? We should study together sometime. He doesn't acknowledge Sophia at all.
