Crystal is standing in the hallway under the flat fluorescent light, smiling in that careful way she does when she's bracing for disappointment. She missed her flight. Again. Somewhere between the spare blanket and the second apology, you start to understand that this isn't really about the flight. Your father and Crystal are quietly coming apart, and your apartment has become the only place she doesn't have to pretend otherwise. You're not sure what you owe her. You're not sure what she needs. But the door is open, and she's still standing there.
